Who I Am

I am Sherri, and I’m excited to be starting this new endeavor. I’m one of those people who gets very passionate about what I am interested in, and I am passionate about growing beautiful flowers!

I have spent my adult life as an educator, manager, and director of a non-profit organization. As I retire from my professional life, I wanted to find something that would excite me, keep me active, and give purpose to my days. After the last few summers of yearning to be home and in my flower gardens, I knew that raising more flowers on a full-time basis was what I wanted to do.

Our home’s backyard can only hold a few small flower gardens, but my husband, Doug, owns a farm-place just 12 miles out of town where he raises cattle and rents the crop land. The farm has two side-by-side silos which create a landmark that can be seen from a few miles away. Maybe I could have a large garden plot at the farm! Being the supportive guy that he is, Doug has lovingly set aside a 1/2 acre of prime crop land for my flower field. I think he is pretty proud that I am turning into a farmer!

Preparing to start flower farming was a lot of work. I am amazed at how much there is to learn, and yet I can’t get enough! Before breaking ground, I took three online courses, viewed untold hours on You Tube, and read several books on flower farming. I ordered seeds and seed starting supplies, and have a grow room in the lower level of our home. I even bought a used ATV on which to get around the farm! I am excited, but keep reminding myself to start slowly and stay small, learning along the way. The summer of 2023 was my summer of experimentation to learn which flowers bloom when, the challenges that show up, and what types of events and flower sales worked best for my life.

I enjoyed having such success with growing beautiful flowers that I began selling at the Market at the Meridian farmer’s market on most Saturdays in July, August, Sept., and Oct. Thank you to those who bought my bouquets at the markets! I had many customers come back, telling me that my flowers lasted 10 days or two weeks, and even one who said her bouquet lasted three weeks!

I hope to have you as a flower customer in 2024!
